The Gin Room
Our beautiful and historic building located on 38 New Street, is part of an Elizabethan terrace of houses. It's believed to have been built in the 17th century, and would've been a sizeable merchant's residence.
The house became the property of Plymouth Council in the 1931 when it was a tenement dwelling, until it was declared unfit for human habitation in 1958. The Plymouth Barbican Trust, established in 1957, took over the care of the building as part of their conservation of areas of historical interest in and around Plymouth’s waterfront.
The building went through major reconstruction and Planning permission was granted in June 1959 for a souvenir, antique shop and tea rooms. Subsequent planning granted includes the use of the building as a shop, offices and the former ‘New Street Gallery’. Then Barbican Botanics Gin Room was born - for all your gin tasting needs.
The Bar and Garden
Step inside a hidden oasis on the backstreets of the Barbican. Our quaint building has been known to feel as though you are "sitting in someone's living room". Our peaceful medieval garden is the perfect place to soak up the sun in the summertime, and get cosy on those colder evenings with our heated booths!
